OS X 10.5 Leopard (Chablis) - 26 October 2007; OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - 28 August 2009; OS X 10.7 Lion (Barolo) - 20 July 2011; OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion (Zinfandel) - 25 July 2012; OS X 10.9. As I explained in Installing Lion: What you need to know, one of the requirements for installing Lion is that you already have Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6) version 10.6.6 or later installed. Unfortunately, installing Mountain Lion requires that you already have a Mac running Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) or Lion (OS X 10.7). If you're currently running a Leopard system, you're out of luck, and need to pay $29 to upgrade to Snow Leopard, and then an additional $20 to upgrade again to Mountain Lion. Mac OS X Leopard was released on October 26, 2007. It was called by Apple 'the largest update of Mac OS X'. Leopard supports both PowerPC - and Intel x86 -based Macintosh computers; support for the G3 processor was dropped and the G4 processor required a minimum clock rate of 867 MHz, and at least 512 MB of RAM to be installed.
This is the final version of Mac OS X which can support the PowerPC structure as snow leopard function only on Intel-based Macs. The latest released is 10.5.8 (Build 9L31a) on August 13, 2009. Its kernel type is hybrid (XNU). This version is preceded by Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger and succeeded by Mac OS X snow leopard. It is the first operating system that has open-source BSD to be certified as fully UNIX cooperative.
